English Grammar

To: the participates of the B-Greek list,

FWIW ... I've picked up "The Language of the New Testament" by Eugene van
Ness Goetchius (1965), it is unlike any first year grammar I've ever seen
(and I'm quite enjoying reading it). In his biography, he recommends: "The
Structure of English" by Charles C. Fries (1952). In "A
Beginning-Intermediate Grammar of Hellenistic Greek" by Robert W. Funk
(1973), Funk lists three books on English grammar. The above cited work by
Fries, and in addition he cites: "Linguistics and English Grammar" by H. A.
Gleason (1965) and "Growth and Structure of the English Language" by Otto
Jespersen (1956).

I have no objection to reading such older works (in fact, I've been reading
Leonard Bloomfield's 1935 work entitled "Language," as well as more recent
works on linguistics), but I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation
for a more recent published work on English grammar? Or perhaps a short
review on any of the three works cited above? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated.
