Is this a proper method to think through a passage like this?
Substantiation: the act of substantiating.
To substantiate:
Webster:
1. to give substance or true existence to
2. to give concrete form or body to
3. to establish by proof or evidence
Therefore,
Regarding the THINGS HOPED FOR:
Does faith give true existence to them? [no, lack of faith does not affect
their existence]
Does faith give substance to them? [??]
Does faith give concrete form or body to them? [no]
Does faith serve as evidence of them? [??]
If one takes faith in its passive form, you are now referring to that
which is believed (Christian teachings)
Hence, regarding the THINGS HOPED FOR:
Does the body of faith (teachings) give true existence to them? [yes]
Does the body of faith (teachings) give substance to them? [yes]
Does the body of faith (teachings) give concrete form or body to them? [yes]
Does the body of faith (teachings) serve as evidence of them? [yes]
Also, regarding the THINGS HOPED FOR, is this the ablative of source?
Does the body of faith give concrete form to the source of our expectation?
[yes]
Does the body of faith serve as evidence for the source of our expectation?
[yes]
or,
Does faith serve as evidence for the source of our expectation? [??]
Does faith establish the truth of the source of our expectation? [no]
I guess the answers one gives to these questions [yes or no] will determine
how he or she understands this passage.
Am I even close to how you would teach someone to work through this?
Thank you,
Mark Wilson
