Just got back from Sunday school. I have the following question regarding
our discussion today on these verses.

John 14 :13, 14 read as follows:

KAI hO TI AN AITHSHTE EN TWi ONOMATI MOU TOUTO POIHSW, hINA DOXASQHi hO
PATHR EN TWi hUIWi
EAN TI AITHSHTE ME EN TWi ONOMATI MOU EGW POIHSW

My Sunday school teacher has a Greek background and translates it this way:

“And I will do whatever you ask that is in accordance with my legacy, so
that the Father may be glorified by means of the Son. If you ask me anything
that is in accordance with my legacy, I will do it.”

He further said that “according to my legacy” means that our prayers should
model those of the Lord’s. Not so much the actual requests, but in
accordance with those things that concerned the Lord. This then requires us
to study Christ’s prayers to ask those things that align with God’s will. He
used as an illustration that the Lord never prayed for a million dollars, or
a job promotion. I assumed he meant "selfish" things.

I have two questions regarding his translation:

EN

He translates this “in accordance with.” Is this acceptable? It comes close
to Wallace’s Standard use of EN, “according to the standard of.”

ONOMATI

He indicated that this word had many meanings. such as:

1. all that a name implies or covers
2. authority
3. character
4. rank
5. majesty
6. power
7. excellence

Based on this list, he translates it “legacy” which he says kind of groups
them all together. Is this acceptable?

I guess I have always had a question on the formula “in His name.” This
seems to make a lot of sense to me, but wondered if others could confirm
this.

Thank you,

Mark Wilson
