Dear Dmitry,
You write: "I have a question about using EPIKALEOMAI in 1Pet 1:17:
'KAI EI PATERA EPIKALEISQE TON ... KRINONTA ....' How should it be
translated? Does the verb mean 'to name' or 'to call upon'?"
BAG, s.v. EPIKALEW, 2.b., treats the phrase EI PATERA EPIKALEISQE TINA
as "If you call upon someone as Father," citing 1 Pet 1:17. It notes that
P72 has the variant KALEITE, which they take to mean "give a surname,
call." BAG faces your controversy by giving articles: J. W. Tyrer, JTS 25
(1924) 139-50; with a reply by R. H. Connolly, ibid., 337-68. Also they
cite F. Notscher, "Epiklese," Biblica 30 (1949) 401-404.
						Sincerely,
						Harold Holmyard
