Dear Theodore,
Again, on why TOU QEOU is only a C reading in UBS3, I should guess
that since one of the preferences in textual criticism is for the shorter
reading, the early absence of TOU QEOU may have seemed attractive to some.
Several witnesses for deleting the words are early: Clement, Irenaeus,
Tertullian, and Origen. And the Syriac Peshitta probably dates to the late
300's. The presence of two textual variants that add to "spirit" may have
seemed to be explanatory additions to some.
