<< In this text can one translate:
"hO hIDRWS AUTOU hWSEI QROMBOI hAIMATOS..."
as "the drops of his sweat became like as blood..." ? >>
Literally one might translated: "his sweat was/became like drops of blood"
(or perhaps QROMBOI hAIMATOS means "clots of blood").
By moving "drops of" to before "his sweat" you are paraphrasing the text,
since there is noway one could grammatically take hIDRWS as modifying
QROMBOI. Off hand, I seen nothing wrong with paraphrasing the text in this
manner, since sweat often naturally forms drops. Indeed, the point of the
text was that the Lukan Jesus was sweating profusely. As for "as like," I
assume you meant to write "as/like," since "as like" is not grammatical.
Unfortunately, a literal translation might give the mistaken impression
that the Lukan Jesus was sweating drops of blood. So although KATABAINONTES
EPI THN GHN clearly modifies QROMBOI, it might make more sense to translate
something along these lines: "his sweat fell to the ground like falling
drops (or clots) of blood."
