Addendum:
Or closer to the Greek syntax would be: "his sweat fell like drops (or
clots) of blood falling down upon the ground." Here I'm taking EGENETO to
mean "happen" rather than "became" (or even "was"); and thus translated it
as "fell" since it "happened" like falling drops of blood. BAGD took
EGENETO as a substitute for the forms of EIMI (II.1). That was the way I
first took it, as meaning "was." But on second thought, it might make sense
to take it as "happen, take place" (thus "fell").
