I noticed in the course of reading the Pauline corpus for the Lenten Greek 
Reading Group that he seems to almost slavishly follow the LXX.  He may omit 
a word or two from time to time, but the text he uses is fairly consistently 
the LXX.  I would therefore tend to discount his "making his own translation 
of the Hebrew scriptures."
