Issue: ESMEN hEN

Question: Can the neuter hEN mean “a unit?”

Passage: John 10:30

Translation: I and the father are one (thing).

Can we translate this verse:

I and the father are a unit.

Hence, what would be under discussion in this passage is a description of
Function or Office (as the Christ), not Being or Essence.

I note a portion of the previous verse:

hO PATHR MOU hO' DEDWKEN MOI PANTWN (all) MEIZON ESTIN

And later, Christ says 14:28:

hO PATHR MEIZWN MOU (me) ESTIN

It will take me a while to get use to asking questions in a vacuum. I
realize that we are not to engage in
theological discussions here, so I mention these two other points only to
indicate that the Function of Christ
might also be implicit elsewhere in John.

In other words, I did not just select the word "unit"
without cause.

No comments about theological issues are sought.

Respectfully,

B. J. Williams
