I recall now that we went over this a month or two ago but I had forgotten;
there never was a third edition--what those who have it are using as the
current in-print version is the second edition. I suppose it is like
software version numbers: the third edition has been awaited for so long
that it became vaporware, and the epiphany we now await is of what is
called the "4th Rev edition." Perhaps the 3rd edition had to be revised. I
suppose we never go backwards do we; the price of gas will never again drop
to what it used to be, etc., etc. Yet once upon a time there were revisions
of smaller compass than the first editions, as witness Ovid's preface to
the Amores:
qui modo Nasonis fueramus quinque libelli,
tres sumus: hoc illi praetulit auctor opus.
ut iam nulla tibi nos sit legisse voluptas,
at levior demptis poena duobus erit.
which, rather freely turned, becomes: "We who of yore were Naso's five
books are now three, as the author prefers to have us; while you still may
not enjoy reading them, at least it won't hurt as much with two books
subtracted."
