What is a Subject?

This morning I sent a message with above subject-header in response to
Randall Buth's response to a message from Clay Bartholomew. Although I
honestly meant it as an attempt at humor, it was flawed from the outset
because based upon serious misunderstandings of things that I had thought
Clay had been saying recently. I want therefore to say two things publicly
and clearly about that message which I won't even deign to cite but will
simply refer to as my message of Sun, 28 May 2000 09:54:08 -0400:

(1) I apologize for ill-chosen phrases about Clay that were evidently open
to serious misinterpretation. I shall try rein myself in from reckless
attempts at humor hereafter;

(2) I had no intention whatsoever in calling a halt to the thread, such as
it was, on the above subject. I did suggest that we ought to keep the focus
upon Greek rather than talking in broad general terms about
Linguistics--what I thought I was doing was simply re-stating Randall's
point about the difference between structures of different languages.
