It would be better if you related this question to a specific text since the
context is always important. Generally speaking though the pluperfect
indicates that a result is in existence at a point in past time, thus the
completed action which issues in the result had to occur before that. Often
though the pluperfect sounds in translation like a simple past, Luke 4:41
