Dear Steve,

You wonder:

>When a writer poses an alternative in the form of
>a rhetorical question, what is the rhetorical function and/or force of such
>a construction?

My sense, at least here in Rom 3:29, is that Paul widens the screen of the
reader's thought to some larger perspective. He battles a false notion by
showing how it fails to account for more encompassing realities.
