Dear Mark,
In addition to the testimony of those on the list fluent in two languages,
I'd like to add the recent seminary experience of Latin as a second
language. I attended a major seminary only a decade after they ceased the
practice of lecturing, writing and conducting all class business in Latin.
This practice was in place throughout the 1960's and was a continuation of a
centuries long academic tradition. I assure you that those engaged in
strenuous academic argument in Latin were fluent and thinking in this second
tongue, a "dead" language.
Granted this type of immersive environment is rare today, but I believe this
is the goal of Dr. Buth's programs in Israel. Don't underestimate the power
of the human mind.
