Gentlemen:
"OIDAMEN DE hOTI hOSA hO NOMOS LEGEI TOIS
EN TW NOMW LALEI, hINA PAN STOMA FRAGH KAI
hUPODIKOS GENHTAI PAS hO KOSMOS TW QEW. DIOTI
EX ERGWN NOMOU OU DIKAIWQHSETAI PASA SARX
ENOPION AUTOU DIA GAR NOMOU EPIGNWSIS hAMARTIAS."
Please forgive the poor transliteration.
The first two instances of NOMOS here are preceded
by definite articles while the last two do not have the articles.
What is the force of the definite article or its absence?
Would NOMOS without the article be understood as
"law in general" while NOMOS with the article would be "a
particular law or a particular set of laws?"
