In an oversimplified summary, Porter and Fanning are in agreement in
probably about 80% of their
conclusions. The biggest single difference relates to whether or not the
verb *grammaticalizes*
temporal reference at the level of semantics (the questions does *not*
relate to
*pragmatics*--at which point they would be in basic agreement again).
