Dear Listers,

I also have a GAR joke to tell. It was related to us by the prof. in one of my NT classes. There was once this preacher preaching on a famous Pauline passage containing this infamous logical GAR. However, his Greek got the better of him, and when he came to the crucial moment of expositing the intricacies of the particle, he thunders out: "And now we come to the crux of the matter, the mighty PROPOSITION YAP."

And I couldn't resist the chance to relate once more this anecdote about a
Classics professor at the University of Chicago many decades ago who was
researching the multifarious usages of GAR (I knew his name once, but
that's not really important to the story); he had a young woman student
doing a lot of the digging for him in those days before computer searches
of electronic data: she was known all over the university area as that
professor's "GAR GOYLE."
