Over the years the question whether Rom 16:7 refers to an apostle Junia =
has come up a number of times on B-GREEK. I don't intend to launch a =
discussion of that again. Probably more than is in-bounds for this list =
has already been said several times. I offer this only as a =
bibliographic reference that I think may many readers of the list:
Eldon Jay Epp. "Text-Critical, Exegetical, and Socio-cultural Factors =
affecting the Junia/Junias Variation in Romans 16,7." Pages 227-291 in =
New Testament Textual Criticism and Exegesis: Festschrift J. Delobel. =
Edited by A. Denaux. BETL 161. Leuven: Leuven University Press / =
Peeters, 2002.
The first nine or ten pages of the article assess the current state and =
future prospects of the discipline of NT textual criticism. The next six =
pages discuss the history of treatment of text-critical issues in other =
gender-related passages, esp. 1 Cor 14:34-35. The rest of the article is =
given to Junia / Junias.=20
Heads: "The lexical form and introductory matters"; "Junia in early =
Christian writers--and beyond"; "Excursus on Latin masculine/feminine =
accusatives"; "Contracted name theory"; "Junia/Junias in current Greek =
New Testaments: Accentuation and the text-critical situation"; =
"Junia/Junias in past editions of Nestle, Nestle-Aland, and UBS"; =
"Accentuation of <GK>Iounian</GK> in reference works--and the attendant =
cultural bias"; "Junia/Junias in Greek New Testaments and their =
influence on exegesis"; "Junia/Junias in English translations"; =
"Andronicus and Junia as 'outstanding among the apostles.'"
Two tables show what Epp found in over 50 editions of the Greek NT; a =
third tabulates usage in English versions from Tyndale to NLT.
Epp says: "The conclusion to this essay is simple and straightforward: =
<I>there was an apostle Junia.</I>"
If you reply to me off-list for any reason, please use the address in my =
sig lines.
