Do Gospel authors often use the imperfect when they were eyewitne sses?

I'm doing a harmony of the gospels. This is something I first wondered
about studying the story of the Samaritan woman (John 4). It's striking how
John uses imperfects in this story at the point that he says that the
disciples met up with Jesus at the well. I wonder now if I see Luke doing
the same thing in his account of Jesus' visit to the synagogues at Nazareth
and Capernaum (Luke 4).
Thoughts?
