I agree with Ken that this is getting off topic, but we should be clear
about the extent of the scroll. If Morgenstern's article has been met
with skepticism it is likely due to the quality of the microfiche.
Better photographs vindicate his reading of a numbering system on column
17 and earlier sections.

Stegemann's summary of 1QapGen in _The Library of Qumran_ (p.98), to
which Ken referred me off-list, is overly brief and does not justify his
assertions about the length of the scroll and which portion we have.
Further, he seems unaware of Morgenstern's article. As Morgenstern's
work came out in 1996 and Stegemann's book was published in 1998, it
seems possible that Stegemann was not aware of Morgenstern's work before
the book went to press.

Much of the uncertainty of this matter arises from use of the microfiche
edition of the Dead Sea Scrolls, which contains less than satisfactory
photographs of 1QapGen. While Qimron, et al. have published readings of
these columns, they did not publish high-resolution photographs of them.
Hence, independent verification of their readings has been virtually
impossible except by using the microfiche. This matter will be resolved
in part, I hope, when I publish my thesis which will contain previously
unpublished, high-resolution photographs of the middle columns of
1QapGen (cols. 3-18).

Yours sincerely,
