Ward, let me first of all applaud your insistence that Paul had
a healthy view of marriage. I think you have much to say on this,
and most, maybe all, of which I would agree.
I wish the person who originally thought to include Chapter breaks
had never come up with that idea. My tendency is to see something
"new" every time I proceed to a new chapter. And often times that
is indeed the case, but not always.
Trying to avoid my tendency to speculate, let me exit this discussion
with a final reply.
Chapters 5 and 6 cover areas that would apply to all, married
and unmarried. And as you have already committed to, PORNEIA
can be used with reference to the married, so 6:18 might very
well apply to the married also.... indeed it does.
I have no problem seeing 5:1 applying to married people, the verse
that really does begin a "new topic" and without the use of PERI DE!
And I see quite a bit of instuction to the unmarried in Chapter 7,
as in chapters 5 and 6, but, let me also add....
I see more to the unmarried than married in Chapter 7.
With the above in mind, I would simply say: the PERI DE of 7:1
does NOT introduce a NEW topic, but occurs at this juncture since
it is indeed the VERY topic under discussion. Knowing the questions
the Corinthians had asked Paul, I suspect that they saw
this PERI DE coming. I would recommend considering a new
topic at chapter 8, since that PERI DE does change subject matters.
When there is a change in subject matters, only then would I argue
for a NEW topic.
