Ellipsis

that the idea that there is some "ellipsis" involved in this usage of TA
suggests that there's something remaining of the much-older demonstrative
function of the article--and I really don't think there's any residue of
that older demonstrative function of the article in the TA phrases here
under discussion.>>
However the ellipsis based upon the article seems quite a common construction:
1 - ellipsis of a word found earlier in the text:
1 Cor 1:11 hUPO TWN CLOHS [ADELFWN]
Acts 24:5 TOIS IOUDAIOIS, TOIS KATA THN OIKOUMENHN
Lk 2:39 : PANTA TA KATA TON NOMON KURIOU (refers to v. 23)
-BAGD, § 9 notable uses of the article : a - the elliptic use which
leaves a part of a sentence accompanied by the article to be completed
from the context : hO TA DUO = the man with the two (talents) Mt 25:17.
The individual sense of the article explains its use as equivalent of
the demonstrative, "the one of ...", followed by a genitive, to
indicate
a noun previously used in the sentence: BRACUTEROS hO TOU hIPPOU BIOS
TOU TWN ANQRWPWN, the life of the horse is shorter than the [life] of
the man
2 - éllipse d'un mot sous-entendu ; celui-ci est connu par l'usage.
2 - ellipsis of an understood word; this is discerned by usage
Mt 1:6 hH TOU OURIOU = the wife of Uriah
Lk 24:10 MARIA hH IAKWBOU = the wife of James
Rom 16:11 TOUS EK TWN NARKISSOU = his sons?
3 - ellipsis of an understood word (inferred from the context)
Lk 10:7 ESQIONTES TA PAR AUTWN
4 - Ellipsis?
Paul speaking of himself
Acts 24:10 TA PERI EMAUTOU . Here Luke retained the very style of Paul
who gave to TA a very general sense (cf. Eph. 6:21). In indirect
discourse, on the other hand, Luke used PANTWN TOUTWN and TAUTA in
vv. 8
and 9 respectively.
As for EN TOIS in Lk 2:49, allow me to take up again these words in the
thread on Lk 23:43:
<<Being with the person is more important than being in the place, great as
the place may be.>>
