Commentaries: Help or Hindrance?

Just a few questions concerning the use of Greek Commentaries.
Just how helpful are greek commentaries in the early stages of learning
Greek or at any stage for that matter?
Are commentaries in some of the "better" quality series eg NIGTC, less
"Theologically" motivated in interpretation than others of a lesser
quality? (interpretation driven by Theology).
Are commentaries written by Classical Scholars less likely to mislead
than those written by NT only "Specialists"because of the broader range
of language acquisition?
Are commentaries really necessary for sound knowledge of the Greek
language?
I was prompted to ask these questions because of the constant barrage in
Evangelical literature that one must, at all costs purchase the latest
commentary available in order to understand your greek testament aright.
I stem from the evangelical tradition but I am tired of the seemingly
endless tirade of " you must purchase the latest commentary by so and
so, or else you will be mightily impoverished in your grasp of NT greek.
If these question are not within the parameters of the BGreek rules then
I apologise in advance, I just need some sensible guidance on the matter
before I go out of my head.
Grace and Peace to all
