The text should read
SUNAGAGWN *TOUS MALISTA* TWN FILWN KAI THS STRATIAS APECQWS
*ECONTAS* PROS TOUS IOUDAIOUS
Maybe it makes sense now. And the translation was from the NRSV.
Thanks to Mme Chabert d'Hyères, BTW, for the Lukan example. This
is Significant, because Luke does not use PROS; in all the
examples from Josephus, and the instance from 3 Maccabees, the
idiom consists of the three elements [ADVERB OF HOSTILITY] [ECEIN]
[PROS TINA], often (but not always) in that order (Antiquities
14.164 seems to be mistake his, not mine!).
I guess what I am asking is, is ECEIN PROS TINA, in a context
such as 2 Cor 5:12, context, enough to suggest that an adverb
of hostility is to be to supplied? Does anyone know of other
examples of ECEIN PROS TINA being used without supporting adverbs
to express hostility?
With apologies for my bungling
