I just received my copy of *Greek Scripts.* Haven't had time to read it, but
I've paged through it and though that I'd pass along a few brief notes since
several had expressed interest. (Bibliog. & purchase info in quoted message
below, which I've left intact since it's been several weeks since the topic
was active. I was not able to find an American source; had to order direct
from the publisher in London, but it came quite quickly--and they take US
personal checks.)
This is a slender paperback vol.--only 72 pgs. (8" x 10.5")--but it has some
superb photographs in it which serve the intended purpose very well:
introducing beginners to the various forms in which Greek has been written
from its most ancient witnesses (Linear B/Mycenaean Greek), inscriptions,
ostraca, numismatics, the papyri, Byzantine MSS, an on through typeset Greek
text. Each of these have an entire chapter. Most photos (several to a page)
are B&W, though there are a few color plates and some full-page photos.
There is a concise, but helpful discussion of the evidence from each era,
usually with a chapter bibliography for further reading. The cost (US$30 +
$4 shipping to US) may be too high relative to its size for the casual
student, but libraries ought to have this volume, as it would serve a
profitable role in the library of most teachers of Greek. I am going to
require the reading of it (though not as a required textbook) next semester
in my "Survey of Greek Literature" course (in which we read from koine texts
outside the NT).
