This note appears in the NET Bible at the Gospel of
John 1:18

Passage:
"No one has ever seen God. The only one,45 himself
God, who is in the presence of the Father, has made
God known."

Note 45tc
The textual problem MONOGENHS QEOS ("the only God")
versus hO MONOGENHS hUIOS ("the only son") is a
notoriously difficult one. Only one letter would have
differentiated the readings in some mss, since P66,
one of the earliest mss (2nd-3rd century), uses the
contraction QC; the alternative would have been UC...

What is that letter "C" that appears after the theta
or upsilon in this note? It would appear to be the
sigma, but I can't find any source that lists a
capital sigma as C.

I also would like to ask on more question here. In
addition to the difference between one letter (Q or U)
wouldn't the definite article also be different, since
MONOGENHS QEOS has no definite article. Why does hUIOS
require the definite article and QEOS doesn't?
