Having now looked at the data I gathered some time ago on PEIRASMOS, I
see that I made a mistake in my last post. It is the verb PEIRAZW not
the noun PEIRASMOS that appears in the Greek Anthology -- at 12.213.
This seems to be the only occasion in pre end cent CE literature where
the verb might bear the meaning "to entice".
I do not think an instance can be found of the noun bearing the sense of
enticement, especially if what we mean by this is an inner psychological
experience. In the ancient world the phenomenon designated by PEIRASMOS
was always something that results from an encounter with something
"outside of one's self.
On this, see my article on "testing" in _Dictionary of New Testament
Background_ published by IVP.
Yours,
Jeffrey Gibson
