I wholeheartedly agree with you, Jeffrey. I am often frustrated by the
traditional renderings of this word.
Btw, note also that E.V. Rieu translates the word "ordeal" in his
translation of the gospels.

Is there a page missing (after p. 2) from your fantastic pdf file?
