i learned under the 5-case system and wasn't even aware of 
the other variation until years later (~6) when going 
through mounce.  i'm interested what particularly is 
frustrating. the way i've heard it described is that one 
is based on form and other function. there are only five 
forms but some teach eight functions. from what i 
understand, this eight functions is a major simplification 
most intermediate-advanced grammars seem to have many more 
than eight listed. i think it would be helpful to 
distinguish between form and function and realize that the 
eight case teaching system is a best minimal attempt to 
describe the different functions of the five cases 
(forms).
