I want to add a brief note of my own to express my gratitude to Trevor for
forwarding Matthew's response and to the list-members who responded to
Matthew's desperate cry. We B-Greekers tend, I think, to disagree with each
other more than we agree on the matters that make up most of our list
correspondence; we differ widely from each other too when it comes to
exactly what we believe. Nevertheless as list-members we are, I think,
wholeheartedly in consensus about the profound value of coming to know the
Greek biblical text in its earliest extant form and language. We all know
that, to use a secular Greek expression, CALEPA TA KALA, "beautiful things
are hard." We know that competence in Biblical Greek is anything but easy
to achieve and that achieving even minimal competence in it requires a
considerable commitment and investment of time and effort, much of which at
many times seems disappointing in proportion to what we have gained by it.
Ultimately it's a matter of personal experience with the difficulties of
learning Greek that counts most when we are confronted by the desperate
plea of our young friend in the present case. Given the good-will and
caring commitment of our list-members, I'm just so very happy that the list
can be a conduit for such good people at work as this present experience
has indicated.
