On learning Greek, I have always liked a short article in one of the Greek
grammars I own (I can cite that later if anyone is interested), and have
made the idea my own.
The article points out that men and women often learn languages to better
understand their spouse or love interest, if the native language in question
is different from their own. Although God is over every language and
culture, he expressed himself partly through events of special significance
to us in times of history when Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek were spoken. If
we learn languages for our love interests, it follows that we should learn
languages for the sake of our Lord. This perspective encouraged me to press
on through the "smelly feet" stage of beginning grammar and each year after
that has been a delight to me as I press a little further for fluency.
I recall that an adult male Jew should have written out the Torah once in
his lifetime -- language and tradition are inseparable and our holy text is
a treasure. I study Greek not because I'll be sneered at if I don't, but
because I want to understand how God expresses his character through his
work in history. I am trying to learn to read the Bible.
Bless the Name
