which means no more, I think, than that later scribes failed to understand
the partitive usage in the construction and so altered the text so that it
would suit their grammatical expectations.

This has been a very interesting thread, now that I understand it. My dog-eared, ragged, coverless, copy of the Greek NT that I carry with me everywhere is a Textus Receptus. Recently, I have began using an eclectic text as I finally began to understand that it is really a better text than the TR. Nevertheless, the reading of John 1:24 that I am familiar with has the article, and I failed to notice that the text originally cited in this discussion does not. Naturally, I understood the text to mean, "And those who were sent were of the number of the Pharisees." Seeing that it is probably best to go with the N-A/UBS text here and omit the article, new possibilities open up -- and now I already know the arguments for each one! This is why I subscribe to B-Greek, to help me understand the text better, one verse at a time. I have read through the NT in Greek several times, but participation on this list helps keep me from settling into my own -- often uninformed -- assumptions about the
meaning of the Greek. In addition, I think I will -- putting the sentimental value aside -- replace my carry-around TR with a N-A.
