I have heard now from Micheal Palmer, one of the members of the erstwhile
committee working to prepare a new Hellenistic Greek Grammar to replace
BDF. Micheal (sic! NOT "Michael"). He tells me that the project is
currently defunct, that it ran out of steam partly because U of Chi Press
was dragging its feet on contracts and thereby damping enthusiasm of
committee members to continue the effort. Micheal says that Daryl Schmidt
will be resigning his department chair at TCU next year and is talking
about trying to pick it up again soon; Micheal is hopeful but not holding
his breath. I'm glad to hear there's at least a possibility and to find out
exactly what the status of the project is--i.e. "defunct."
The other matter broached yesterday was the notion of producing and posting
a web version of Funk's textbook, _A Beginning-Intermediate Grammar of
Hellenistic Greek_. I'm attempting to contact Funk to seek his blessing for
such a project; we shall see whether anything more comes of this. I
continue to think that this was a real "breakthrough" work in the
presentation of how Hellenistic Greek works--the nearest thing to the sort
of revolution in the categories in which Greek is conceived such as Clay
Bartholomew used to yearn for earnestly. Of course it's possible that
others who have seen it don't feel quite so enthusiastically as I do (but
then I'm used to having enthusiasms that others don't share!). We shall see
what comes of it.
