Actually, I don't see how one could complete a first-year course without
coming face-to-face with this construction--one meets it with such
frequency that I don't see how it could be avoided in ordinary reading.

Yes, and quite frankly, I find Smyth's grammatical terminology and
classification of constructions a lot more helpful than much of what one
finds in some of the Koine grammrs.
