There are probably other items that will be recommended, but if you haven't
done any reading in "Discourse Analysis" hitherto, you might best start
with Stephen H. Levinsohn's _Discourse Features of New Testament Greek_
It's an SIL publication and is listed in their catalog at $32 from SIL:

This book does go into basic foregrounding and backgrounding matters.
