My suspiscion is that the question of imminency comes into play in
passages such as IITIm. 4:1, Heb. 13:14, IPet. 5:1, Revelation 3:10,
which are all eschatological events that were not about to happen in
Peter's or John's day. Therefore, the word appears to be used in
contexts that do not demand immediacy as part of the definition.
In fact, L & S first definition of the word is as follows:
"to be destined or likely to, indicating an estimated certainty or
strong probability in the present, past, or future."
In the contexts above, I think the fact is that certainty is in view and
the time element is secondary. I would certainly be willing to hear
others on this.
