"To each major word we have assigned one meaning and have held to that
meaning as far as the context permitted."
It seems to me that assigning a single meaning to each major word,
although it is certainly tempting, is going to guarantee a lot of inaccurate
translation. We simply can't do that with Greek any more than we can with
English. If I were to say, "I'm a fireman and missed riding on the fire
truck because I was late to the fire station since my car was only firing on
3 cylinders and if I'm late again I'm sure to be fired," nearly all speakers
of English would understand perfectly what I said. If a translator insisted
on using "fire" in the same sense each time it appeared, the readers would
almost certainly misunderstand.
How I wish we could simply plug in an equivalent and be sure we got it
right.
