I worked through large chunks of Romans several years ago, before Moo or Schreiner were available. I decided then that the best approach was cross-sectional (i.e., look at a handful of commentaries side-by-side which provided particularly fruitful contrasts when examined). I thought Cranfield the absolute BEST commentary available on Romans, and worked through the old Barrett volume (Black's/Harper's) and Dunn (WBC), with occasional reference to Matthew Black, Bruce, Kasemann, etc.

Today, I would still definitely start with Cranfield alongside Barrett and Dunn (they're still really good). In addition to those already named, I would also consult Schlatter, Stott, Zeisler, Achtemeier, Jewett, Stowers, etc.

I also recommend the newest volume in the Smith and Helwys series by my mentor, Charles Talbert: Talbert cuts through the politically correct fog regarding covenantal nomism, etc. that has surrounded Romans for some time.

Also: Cranfield published an article in Expository Times on his suggested approach to preaching through Romans. I thought it was an EXCELLENT article, even though I didn't ultimately follow much of his outline. The bibliographical information is:

Cranfield, Charles E.B. "The Pastor's Opportunities, Pt. 8: Preaching on Romans." Expository Times 99 (1987) 2:36-40.

Hope that helps.
