" The Times " today publishes a hitherto unknown novella, Stancliffe's
Hotel, written in 1838 by Charlotte Brontë, when she was 23.
It is annotated at various points by a modern editor, and I thought
list-members might be as intrigued as I am to find that the literal use of
ENDUW persisted into the 19th. century.

At one point, she writes:
 >>
He wore a blue dress-coat with velvet collar, velvet waistcoat and charming
white tights: I endued <<

and the annotation reads: [put on as a garment (OED); the word also has
the sense of "invest or endow with a spiritual gift", and carries a
mock-heroic resonance here; frock; frock-coat]

Regards
