But the "lectio difficilior" IS an internal criterion.

If it makes "good sense" or not has nothing to do with what is original
or not. "good sense" is a very weak textcritical criterion.

Here "better" does not mean "original", but only "smoother". This
thinking in the end resulted in the Byzantine text. :-)
