In Mark 10:37, the sons of Zebedee request that Jesus allow them to
sit on his right or left in his glory. In doing so, according to the UBS4
and NA27, they use the word ARISTERWN for left.
In Jesus' reply, verse 40, he uses the word EUWNUMWN for left.
In the Matthean parallel (20:21,23), EUWNUMWN is used for left
in both request and reply.
It appears that manuscripts of Mark mostly support EUWNUMWN
with, according to Swanson, only B, L, Psi, and Delta supporting
ARISTERWN.
Are these two words completely synonymous? Is there any particular
reason that James and John would have used one form in their request
and Jesus another in his reply?
Thanks,
