Although I hesitate to disagree with Carl's mature judgment, I'm not
convinced that an analytical is a prudent choice for a beginning student.
Most analyticals give no more info on the semantics of a word than Newman.
They do give more info re. morphology, but most beginning students use them
as a crutch and don't learn their forms well if they start using an
analytical. (For that reason my syllabus forbids their use in first year.)
I do agree that Newman is inadequate as a lexicon. And Carl's advice to
spend the money saved on something better is well taken. I do think that
BDAG is well worth the expense despite the steep price tag ($125)--you can
read my thoughts on it, as well as begin to learn how to use it, at:
http://faculty.bbc.edu/rdecker/bdag.htm
Perhaps a good alternative if you can't yet afford BDAG is Abbott-Smith's
*Manual Greek Lexicon of the NT.*
If you discipline yourself to save $5/week by not spending it on the vending
machines, etc., you can afford BDAG before Easter. And if you add in
Christmas gifts and loose change, you can probably have it in time for 2d
semester. It's worth every penny of the price. We all wish it were less
expensive, but once you learn to use it well, you'll perhaps buy a second
copy--I just did.
