Can someone please help me get a better understanding of DIAKONOS ?

My lexicon (Abbott-Smith, 1973) gives the following:

    1. servant, attendant, minister
    2. church officer (so in pre-Christian
        times), a deacon

    synonyms: DOULOS, QERATWN, hUPHRETHS.
All these imply relation to a person, in
    distinction from which DIAKONOS represents
rather the servant in relation to his work.
    Cf. also LEITOURGOS, OIKETHS.

Any help towards a better understanding would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

Ted Shoemaker
