Originally, if I am not mistaken, the term was actually used of those
that serve or wait tables, and that was the original function of the
deacons as per apostolic design in Acts 6.  This became a permanent
office, as did the overseer/pastor-teacher, the qualifications for which
are set forth in ITim. 3...c. 60 AD.

Basically, the overseer (singular) was the office that was delegated
authority from the Lord to teach and shepherd His flock.  Acts 20:28
The deacons (plural) were a group that served under the authority of the
PT, and were responsible for alleviating the physical demands so the
communicator of doctrine could devote his full time and attention to the
study of the WOG and prayer.  Acts 6:4
