I think you are looking in the wrong place (grammar)
and thus making this passage more difficult than it
really is. The verse before vs 40 reads as this...
KAI OUK EGNWSAN hEWS HLQEN hO KATAKLUSMOS KAI HREN
hAPANTAS hOUTWS ESTAI hH PAROUSIA TOU hUIOU TOU
ANQRWPOU
The parallel is between Noah and his generation and
the Son of Man and his generation at the time when the
cataclysmic judgment fell or falls upon them. Note
that the Son of Man is not taken away, nor was Noah.
The ones taken in Noah's day is specified, which
therefore tells who is taken when the Son of Man
comes, that is what hOUTWS tells us.
The NET Bible has this aide...
Like the flood that came and took them all away, the
coming judgment associated with the Son of Man will
condemn many.
