I found the comments on this thread to be quite good, and I want to get
a look at Silva's chapter myself at first opportunity. As a translator
myself (NASB), I'd like to toss out an observation about general
translation methods. You will often read about emphasis on certain Greek
words and grammatical constructions, or hear about emphasis (as a
concept) from various Greek students and enthusiasts; but recognizing
the absence of emphasis (that is, routine constructions and lexical
terms) is equally important. This is certainly one of the challenges of
translation that all of us involved in it face every day. It is also one
more reason that reading lots of Greek (both biblical an extra-biblical,
if you can do it) is valuable. That is probably the only way you really
learn what routine and non-routine Greek looks like.
