An alternative explanation might be that the hOTI introduces an "direct:
perception of the sort that is practically equivalent to direct statement:
"so when the throng realized, 'Jesus isn't there--nor his disciples
either!,' they boarded the boats themselves and went to Capernaum in search
of Jesus."
