For reading and writing Greek , I find it necesary and sufficient, as a beginner studying on my own, to adopt a system of pronunciation in which the sound of each letter is distinct from the sound of every other letter, allowing for consistent variations (e.g., nasalization of the first gamma in a double gamma). The system used in BBG fills the bill.
Consequently, the occasional unexplained deviation on Mounce's CD macht nichts to me.
I have sometimes wondered why the Greeks, noted for subtilty and precision in thought, would practice imprecision when voicing it, e.g., as recently pointed out with reference to omega/omicron and epsilon/ iota/ eta.
