I certainly think some caution needs to be exercised
here. There is, in my opinion, an over-tendency to
connect OT/Qumran terminology and theological concepts
with the religious background of NT writers, most
particularly Saul/Paul. Granted Saul/Paul was deeply
embedded in OT teachings, Pharisaical teachings, and I
suppose very familiar with Qumran cultic ideas, but
more importantly is the religious background that
Saul's/Paul's recipients possessed. I think one can
historically support that the vast majority of
"christians" in the first century were non-Jewish, and
I mean the VAST majority. It would not be overly
productive for Saul/Paul to bring over the nuances of
his religious heritage to those quite unexposed to it.
When I write responses on this list, I generally do
not borrow from my background in eastern mysticism to
convey my thoughts. In fact, words I might use that
would be very descriptive, would probably only
communicate to few if any out here.
