Stephen,

Thank you for the lead to B-D-F. The 1 Km. passage is very interesting, as the construction is very similar-- the verb in question is even hORAW. Saul is looking for someone who knows how to play the harp well, and one of his servants replies: hEWRAKA hUION TWi IESSAI KAI AUTON EIDOTA YALMON, "I have seen a son of Jesse and *him knowing* harp-playing. So it seems that this is an unusual but possible construction. My guess is that it arises from a form of speaking that adds facts by parallelism: "he saw James and John, yes, he saw them in a boat..." by omission of the repeated verb. I think I would render the function of KAI here into (archaic) English thus: "He saw James... and John... even in a boat mending the nets" "even" being here an "intensive particle emphasizing identity", as my dictionary puts it.

Blass-Debrunner-Funk § 442(9), p. 229, claim that the KAI in KAI AUTOUS
here is epexegetical ("that is to say") and cites LXX 1 Km 16:18 for
comparison. They cite other examples with demonstrative pronouns. That
is to say, the phrase headed by AUTOUS functions as a direct object of
EIDEN and explains something about James of Zebedee and John his brother.
